- With more tweaking the Net Zero principals can be upgraded to Passive House standards, thus eliminating the need for a heating and cooling systems altogether.
- Passive House Homes get the majority of their heat energy needed from solar gain through the windows and a well placed thermal mass to hold and slowly dissipate the stored solar heat energy into the home through the night. The remaining heat is provided by body heat from the occupants, appliances, electronics, and the lighting fixtures in the home.
- Summer Cooling is achieved by opening the windows at night and “washing” the home with the cool evening air, thus the thermal mass and the homes interior is cooled. The windows are closed in the morning, and the building stays cool until the next evenings “air wash”. -Very small 2-3 panel grid tied PV panel arrays provide all electricity needed to the Passive Home.
- The extra costs and design constraints make “passive house” less appealing than “Net Zero” to most homeowners, but the passive house performance is truly remarkable!.
